Holy prequel, Boy Wonder, the CW is prepping a series based on Batman sidekick Robin’s pre-Caped Crusader days. "Smallville" exec producers Kelly Souders and Brian Peterson, as well as "Supernatural" exec producer McG, are behind "The Graysons," which has landed a put pilot commitment at the netlet. Just as "Smallville" focused on Clark Kent in the years before he became Superman, "The Graysons" will follow the world of Dick "DJ" Grayson before he takes on the iconic Robin identity and aligns himself with Batman. -------------------- |

Sigh. Doubtless he'll be meeting The Joker before Batman ever did. If they continue mining this particular vein, we still have Hal Jordan, Test Pilot and Ray Palmer, Guy in a Lab Coat to look forward to.

Why doesn't Time Warner just go with Bruce Wayne? Better yet, if you are going to use Robin, dial up the Teen Titans? Conceptually, Smallville works due to Clark Kent progressive growth into Superman. Dick Grayson lost his parents as a young boy. From the gist of this article, Dick loses his parent in his late teens.....anyone remember Batman Forever and Batman & Robin?! It's a bad idea in the host of bad ideas Warner's been pitching. I don't expect Robin to last as long as Smallville. Think Birds of Prey.

Then again, only a pilot has been commissioned. When the WB was transitioning to the CW, they put "Mercy Reef" (based on Aquaman) on the fast track to debut as one of their new CW lead shows, but got cold feet and yanked the plug after the pilot was made. Ironically, the star of the show (Justin Hartley) went on to become Green Arrow on Smallville (they're doing his origin episode this Thursday) and when the Mercy Reef/Aquaman pilot hit iTunes, it was the #1 downloaded item at the time.

CW scraps plans for "The Graysons"

"rethink its DC Comics strategy" and as a result didn't want to do anything big with a DC franchise at the moment -- at least when it came to "Graysons." "The studio has opted not to go forward with the development of 'The Graysons' at this time as the concept doesn't fit the current strategy for the Batman franchise," the studio said in a statement.
